A recent study found that supplementing an Omega 3 gel cap daily may improve dry eye symptoms associated with prolonged exposure to computer screens.
Over 475 people who experienced dry eyes and were using a computer daily for over 3 hours per day for a least one year participated in this study. Participants were divided randomly into 2 groups. The first group received a daily supplement of Omega 3 (360 MG EPA and 240 MG DHA). The second group received a placebo (olive oil). The study lasted 3 months. In addition to logging dry eye symptoms a number of other measurements (Nelson grade, Schirmer test, TBUT and CIC- conjuctival impression cytology) were recorded.
Significant improvements in symptoms were observed in the group supplementing with Omega 3 in comparison with the placebo group. 70% of participants supplementing with Omega 3 were symptom free at the end of the study in comparison to 14.9% of placebo users. Researchers found the Omega 3 supplements improved inherent tear film stability not just increased tear production and volume.
Increased use of computers and the internet has caused an increase in symptoms of dry eyes in middle age as well as in young persons. In the past, dry eye symptoms typically had been seen mostly among the elderly especially women.
Are all Omega 3’s created equally? Absolutely not. Look for fish oils that are moleculary distilled. This process will remove PCBs dioxins and heavy metals like lead and mercury. Additionally this process reduces the oxidation of the oil which keeps it fresh and stable. Sometimes an Enteric-Coating is used to eliminate the fishy odor and aftertaste often times associated with taking fish oil products. The Enteric-Coating protects the softgel capsule from being digested in the stomach and allows the fish oil to reach the lower gastrointestinal tract.
Fish Oil or Omega 3’s beside aiding in dry eye symptoms has been shown to provide cardiovascular enhancing benefits in addition to anti-inflammatory benefits.
