In a recent study adding Omega-3’s to B vitamins provides a synergistic benefit for aiding in slowing the mental decline in older people with mild memory problems.
Over 250 people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) participated in this placebo-controlled study which lasted two years. MCI is a condition where the brain functions at levels lower than what is usually expected for a person’s age. Brain function although lower than expected is not low enough to interfere with a person’s daily life. MCI can however progress to dementia. Blood levels of DHA and EPA as well as cognition were tested throughout the study period.
Researchers found that for individuals with higher baseline Omega-3 levels the B vitamins were helpful for preventing cognitive decline when compared to the placebo. Individuals with low levels of Omega-3 had little or no effect from the B vitamin supplements.
Further studies to see if B vitamins and Omega-3 supplementation can slow the transition from MCI to Alzheimer’s are planned.
