A new study shows individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may benefit from Omega-3 supplementation on a daily basis. PTSD is known to produce symptoms like a pounding heart which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Additionally Omega-3’s are effective for psychiatric disorders like depression which also is associated with PTSD.
Over 80 accident survivors participated in this randomized, placebo-controlled study. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 1,470 mg of DHA and 147 mg of EPA or a placebo daily. The study lasted for 12 weeks.
Heart rates at the start of the study were comparable between all participants. Results showed individuals who were taking the Omega-3 supplements had reductions in their heart rates both at rest and during script-driven imagery when compared with the placebo group.
This adds further evidence that the Military’s interest in Omega-3 is growing. The Military has shown interest in Omega-3 for mood enhancement, reduction in suicide rates among current and former personnel, improvements in recovery from traumatic brain injury as well as improvements in reaction time for fighter pilots.
Make sure your fish oil is molecularly distilled to remove potential toxins. Also a Fish oil that is manufactured to comply with strict European standards will be free of heavy metals, PCB’s, dioxins, pesticides and other unwanted compounds. An enteric coating will protect the Fish Oil from the harsh environment of the stomach, and then the softgel will better travel to the small intestine where it can be digested and its fatty acids released and absorbed into the body. This prevents a fishy aftertaste and odor, and is helpful to sensitive individuals. Even using lemon oil while help with the digestion of the Fish Oil softgel without any fishy burps.
