A study just published shows fish oils supplements taken during the third trimester of pregnancy may reduce the risk of children developing wheezing or asthma.
Over 700 pregnant women, who were at 24 weeks of gestation, participated in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to take either 2.4 grams of Omega-3 fish oil or an olive oil placebo daily until one week after they delivered their baby. The children were than monitored for an additional 5 years.
A 7% reduction in the risk of the children developing asthma or a persistent wheeze was seen in the group who supplemented with the Omega-3 fish oil when compared to the control group. A stronger protective effect was seen in children whose mothers had the lowest average blood levels of DHA and EPA showing a 16% reduction in developing asthma or wheezing compared with the control group. Additionally the Omega-3 group showed a 7% reduced risk of developing lower respiratory tract infections when compared to the control group.
Researchers believe the study results reinforce suspicions that there is a link between the low intakes of Omega-3 in Western diets and the increases in childhood asthma and that Omega-3’s anti-inflammatory properties can provide a measure of relief from this disease.
Make sure your fish oil is molecularly distilled to remove potential toxins. Also a Fish oil that is manufactured to comply with strict European standards will be free of heavy metals, PCB’s, dioxins, pesticides and other unwanted compounds. An enteric coating will protect the Fish Oil from the harsh environment of the stomach, and then the softgel will better travel to the small intestine where it can be digested and its fatty acids released and absorbed into the body. This prevents a fishy aftertaste and odor, and is helpful to sensitive individuals. Some products will use lemon oil to help with the digestion of the Fish Oil softgel without any fishy burps.
