A new double blinded trial shows the benefit of CoQ10 supplementation and relief of symptoms seen in soldiers of the Gulf War (1990-1991). Not to be confused with post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury, Gulf War Illness is linked to exposure to chemical agents like pesticides or meds given to soldiers to protect them from nerve agents. These chemicals may damage the cells mitochondria which are responsible for generating energy at a cellular level.
46 veterans who were diagnosed with Gulf War Illness participated in this trial. They received either 100 mg of CoQ10 or a placebo daily. The trial lasted 31/2 months. Illness symptoms as well as general overall health of the participants were accessed both before and after the trial. Improvements in physical function were seen in 80% of the participants who had been given the CoQ10. Symptoms like fatigue with exertion, memory, headache, irritability and muscle pain were reduced with CoQ10 supplementation.
CoQ 10 is a cell oxygenator and supports the transfer of oxygen between the cells. It is an antioxidant and supports cardiovascular health by promoting energy on a cellular level. Scientific studies show Co Q 10 is three times more bioavailable when delivered in an oil based softgel capsule.
Further studies are planned.
