A new study finds that in individuals with a history of hypertension, even the smallest amount of fish oil may reduce blood pressure.
Over 300 healthy women and men between the ages of 20 and 70 participated in this randomized controlled trial. Participants consumed either a placebo made from palm and soybean oil or a fish oil supplement containing either .7 or 1.8 grams of omega 3. The study lasted 8 weeks.
Blood pressure and other markers of cardiovascular health were assessed at the beginning of the study. Also looked at during the study were whether a person’s genotype, baseline omega-3 levels and gender effected their response to the study treatment.
Results showed participants who supplemented with fish oil had a reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP) if they had high systolic hypertension (SHT) at the beginning of the study. It did not matter which potency of fish oil they received, both dosages were found to be effective.

When buying fish oil make sure that the product has been molecularly distilled which means that PCB’s, Dioxins, and heavy metals like lead and mercury have been removed. This process also reduces oxidation of the oils leaving the fish oil stable and fresh.
To avoid the fish burps look for products that have an enteric coating which protects the softgel from the harsh environment of the stomach. The fish oil can then travel to the small intestines where it can be digested and the fatty acids released and absorbed into the body. Or another option is to find a product that uses lemon oil which will help avoid that fishy aftertaste.
