A new study has found that increased serum levels of Omega-3 essential fatty acids were associated with older men and women seeing improved performance on neuropsychological tests.
Data from over 750 participants of the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study was analyzed. The individuals participating in that study had ages ranging from 53 to 73 years of age.
Improvements in cognitive function scores were seen in individuals who had higher serum Omega-3 levels. Specifically participants with the highest average levels of EPA+DHA+DPA completed the Trail Making Test over 7 seconds speedier than those participants with the lowest average Omega-3 levels. On the Verbal Fluency Test, those individuals who had the highest average Omega-3 levels were able to list 3 more words per minute than those with the lowest average serum levels of Omega-3.
