A new randomized trial of heart failure patients found a benefit in the reduction of atrial fibrillation when CoEnzyme Q10 is supplemented. Atrial fibrillation is a common cardiac arrhythmia which could occur in almost 27% of patients with heart failure.
128 women and men with heart failure who were being treated with ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, statins and/or additional drugs participated in this trial. At the time of entry into the study and at 6 and 12 months ambulatory electrocardiogram monitoring was done for a 24 hour period. In addition inflammatory markers were assessed with blood measurement. 62 participants received a 30 mg dose of CoQ10 for 1 year.
At the end of the trial year, 3 participants who had been supplementing with CoQ10 and 12 participants who had not been receiving the CoQ10 had experienced episodes of atrial fibrillation. MDA levels, a marker of oxidative stress, were reduced in the CoQ10 group but had remained unchanged in the group who had not been supplementing.
Further studies are needed.
