A new study shows daily supplementation of Omega-3 essential fatty acids during pregnancy may reduce the risk of allergies in children.
95 pregnant women from families with a history of allergies participated in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a daily Omega-3 supplement (containing 1.6 grams of EPA and 1.1 grams of DHA) or a placebo which contained 2.7 grams of soy bean oil. This supplementation began in the 25th week of pregnancy and lasted until the third month of lactation.
Results showed that increasing the intake of essential fatty acid (EPA and DHA) levels in colostrum and early mature milk corresponded with fewer allergies in children. None of the children whose mothers were supplementing with Omega-3 developed IgE-associated allergic disease when there was enough EPA and DHA in maternal colostrum. Although not certain, researchers believe the anti inflammatory benefits of Omega-3 might be responsible for this result.
The amount of allergic diseases is continuing to rise globally according to the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED). This organization believes that given the results of this study highlighting the protective benefits of both EPA and DHA on IgE associated allergic disease in infancy and other proven benefits of Omega-3’s (Like the reduction in the risk of early preterm births) the question is now how much Omega-3 should we be supplementing not should we be supplementing Omega-3.
Make sure your fish oil is molecularly distilled to remove potential toxins. Also a Fish oil that is manufactured to comply with strict European standards will be free of heavy metals, PCB’s, dioxins, pesticides and other unwanted compounds. An enteric coating will protect the Fish Oil from the harsh environment of the stomach, and then the softgel will better travel to the small intestine where it can be digested and its fatty acids released and absorbed into the body. This prevents a fishy aftertaste and odor, and is helpful to sensitive individuals. Some products will use lemon oil to help with the digestion of the Fish Oil softgel without any fishy burps.
