A new study which points to long term supplementation with Vitamin E improving mental development in infants born with extremely low birth weight has been recently published.
Over 250 school aged children who were born with extremely low birth weights participated in this study. The children were divided into 3 groups according to the length of time they had been given Vitamin E supplementation as infants. The first group had received no supplements, the second group had received supplements for less than 6 months and the last group had been taking Vitamin E supplements for over 6 months. The third group had the best performance IQ and the least amount of mental impairment in comparison to the other participants.
There are actually eight forms of Vitamin E, four tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma and delta) and four tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma and delta). Vitamin E in the alpha-tocopherol form has been studied for its support with improving cardiovascular health, vision and reductions in the risk of cancer development. Many studies however, have debunked the benefits of this antioxidants over the years. This may be one of the reasons why over 90% of the US Population are not intaking the RDA for Vitamin E.
Further studies are needed.
