According to new research Lutein and Zeaxanthin are found in higher levels in the placenta and the umbilical cord blood than any other carotenoid. This finding adds to the ever growing body of science which supports the benefits of Lutein and Zeaxanthin in infant and fetal development. The evidence has been accumulating which supports the importance of Lutein for Brain Health.
82 mother-infant pairs participated in this study. Participant’s placenta, maternal serum and umbilical cord blood samples were analyzed. Additionally, moms completed food frequency questionnaires and demographic/birth outcome data was analyzed. Results showed the median level of Lutein and Zeaxanthin in the placenta was 0.105 micrograms/gram the most prevalent carotenoid in the placenta and umbilical cord compared to other carotenoids.
Researchers noted that Lutein and Zeaxanthin may be found in higher levels in the placenta because of their structural properties and how they align themselves in the cell membranes. Additionally researchers believe selective uptake by the placenta may occur because these 2 carotenoids improve how the placenta functions.
Further research is needed.
