Research from the British Journal of Sports Medicine finds Glucosamine supplements could reduce knee pain in individuals with cartilage damage and osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease.
24 people with chronic knee pain were given 2000 mg of Glucosamine daily and another 22 people with chronic knee pain were given a placebo. The participants were all between the ages of 20 and 70. Each participant regularly experienced severe knee pain and were forced to curtail their routine daily activities due to this pain. The study lasted 12 weeks. Knee pain and mobility were assessed at regular intervals.
Participants supplementing with Glucosamine experienced mobility improvement at between 4 and 8 weeks into the trial. By the 12th week, approximately 9 out of 10 (88%) of those participants supplementing with Glucosamine found their knee pain was reduced. Only 3 (17%) of the participants taking the placebo reported improvements in knee pain.
Researchers concluded that 2000 mg of daily Glucosamine could provide improvements in mobility and some degree of pain relief in individuals with chronic knee pain due to prior cartilage damage and possibly osteoarthritis.
Larger studies are needed.
