According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, long term supplementation with Glucosamine Sulfate can slow knee osteoarthritis progression.
Around 200 participants with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis at the onset of the study were randomly selected to receive either 1500 mg of Glucosamine Sulfate or a placebo daily. The study lasted 3 years. The average joint space widths of participants were slightly less than 4 mm. Participants also had a Lequesne index score of below nine points. To determine the progression of the osteoarthritis of the knee, researchers measured changes in radiographic minimum joint space width in the medial compartment of the tibiofemoral joint. Symptoms were assessed using the algo-functional indexes of Lequesne and WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities).
Participants supplementing with the Glucosamine Sulfate saw a 20 – 25% improvement in disease symptoms and significant final differences on both the Lequesne index and the WOMAC total index when compared to the participants supplementing with the placebo. Additionally improvements in pain, function and stiffness were also seen in the participants supplementing with the Glucosamine Sulfate.
Glucosamine is a natural substance found in the joints of bones. Glucosamine is necessary for maintaining joint cartilage.
