A new randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study found a combination of Glucosamine Hydrochloride and Chondroitin Sulfate could reduce levels of an important inflammatory biomarker, C – reactive protein (CRP).
18 healthy but overweight men and women participated in this study and were randomly assigned to receive a combination of Glucosamine Hydrochloride (1500 mg/daily) and Chondroitin Sulfate (1200 mg/daily) or a placebo. The study lasted 28 days.
C – reactive protein levels (CRP) decreased on the average 23% in the group taking the Glucosamine Hydrochloride/Chondroitin Sulfate supplement compared with the placebo group. Additionally, analysis of gene set enrichment also found that cytokine activity, as well as other inflammation-related pathways, were also significantly decreased after supplementation with the Glucosamine/Chondroitin.
This study adds to the findings of other important studies, including the $14 million Glucosamine/Chondoitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) which studied the effects of these supplements on over 1,500 people with osteoarthritis. The result of this large study indicated the Glucosamine/Chondroitin combination could significantly decrease knee pain for people with moderate to severe osteoarthritis. This randomized trial was the first of its kind to evaluate the effects of Glucosamine/Chondroitin on inflammation in healthy adults.
Further studies with larger numbers of participants are needed to verify the results of this particular study.
Glucosamine Sulfate is a major building block of the sponge-like tissue found between bones called proteoglycans. Glucosamine is involved directly in repairing eroded or damaged cartilage.
Chondroitin Sulfate works synergistically with Glucosamine Sulfate and acts like a magnet for water. Chondroitin attracts water into the sponge-like tissue found between bones providing a type of fluid shock absorber which encourages nutrients to be absorbed in joint tissue. Chondroitin Sulfate also stops cartilage destroying enzymes from prematurely breaking down cartilage.
