According to a study, dietary supplementation with Red Yeast Rice may lower bad cholesterol (LDL) by 21% which offers an alternative for lowering blood lipid levels for people who are not able or care not to take statin medications. Additionally, a 15% reduction in total cholesterol levels was seen.
25 people received a supplement of Red Yeast Rice for a period of 4 weeks. All the participants were unable to tolerate statins experiencing adverse effects like gastrointestinal intolerance and muscle pain.
Red Yeast Rice is the product of yeast grown on rice. In Asian countries Red Yeast Rice is a dietary staple. Red Yeast Rice contains several compounds that inhibit cholesterol production. This study supports similar studies that report Red Yeast Rice’s ability to reduce blood lipid levels in individuals who cannot tolerate Statin medication.
Here is a little more in-depth information about Red Yeast Rice:
Red Yeast Rice (Monascus purpureus) is yeast fermented on rice and is a traditional botanical used in Chinese medicine. Current research shows Red Yeast Rice can aid in reducing serum cholesterol when used in combination with modifications in diet. Red Yeast Rice works because it naturally contains HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors which are known to interfere with the production of cholesterol in the liver. A 12 week double blind, placebo controlled study done at UCLA School of Medicine in 1999 showed the cholesterol lowering effects of a red yeast rice supplement. In combination with the American Heart Association step 1 diet, participants saw a significant reduction in total cholesterol at the 8 week mark when compared with the group supplementing with a placebo. LDL cholesterol and total triglycerides were also reduced in the group supplementing with the Red Yeast Rice. Another study using Red Yeast Rice showed similar results showing reductions in total cholesterol of 22.7% and LDL of 30.9%. Additionally this study showed an increase in good cholesterol (HDL) of 19.9% and a 34.1% decrease in triglycerides. Research suggests 9.6mg of HMB-CoA reductase inhibitors from Red Yeast Rice to be an effective dose.
Warning: Do not use Red Yeast Rice if pregnant, may become pregnant or breast feeding, because this may cause birth defects. If you are taking any medication it is best to consult with your doctor before use. Avoid this product if you have liver disease.
Just a little note:
According to some individuals Red Yeast Rice should not be taken by customer’s already taking a statin medication.
