A study done in Japan found daily supplementation with the Amino Acid L-Theanine, could help people suffering with anxiety to focus on their daily activities.
18 healthy University students participated in this study. The participant’s anxiety levels were assessed using the manifest anxiety scale (MAS). Students were split into two groups based on their anxiety levels (High and Minimal). Both groups received water or water plus 200 mg of L-Theanine per 100 ml of water. The assessment tests were given repeatedly between 15 and 60 minutes after the participant ingested their drink. Results showed the participants with High anxiety levels who received the L-Theanine experienced a slowing of their heart rate in addition to improvements in attention and reaction times compared with the participants in the same group who had received the placebo. No significant benefits were seen in the participants who were identified to have Minimal anxiety. Additionally the individuals supplementing with L-Theanine did not see any increased drowsiness, slowing of reflexes or impairments in concentration, things often seen in other conventional anti-anxiety treatments.
The Amino Acid L-Theanine is found in tea leaves and is believed to help reduce stress, improve the quality of sleep and promote relaxation. Because the L-Theanine levels found in tea leaves is low in concentration (less than 2 percent), the effective dose of the L-Theanine (between 100 – 200 mg/day) cannot be achieved from drinking tea alone. During rest, L-Theanine actually increases alpha activity in EEG models. This suggests that great relaxation in seen in individuals supplementing with L-Theanine.
