A new study found Colicky infants supplementing with a combination of an eight bacterial strains Probiotic and a Prebiotic, experienced a reduction in both the average evening crying time and the number of crying days.
There was a significantly higher benefit seen for infants who were assigned the Probiotic/Prebiotic supplement when compared to the infants receiving the Simethicone. Additionally reductions were seen in the number of babies who could not be calmed during crying or who could not fall asleep in the group receiving the Probiotic/Prebiotic supplement.
Colic is characterized by severe pain in the abdomen caused by wind or obstruction in the intestines. It is often experienced by babies. It is one of the most common reasons people seek medical advice during a baby’s first few months of life.
Evidence seems to indicate that the gut microbiotas of Colicky babies differ from the microbiotas of Non-Colicky babies. Lower levels of bacteria like Lactobacilli and Bifodobacteria appear to occur in Colicky infants.
The results from this study and earlier studies seem to encourage further investigations into the benefits of Probiotic/Prebiotic supplementation for Colicky babies.
