A new study found that supplementing with Lutein daily improved the benefits of a low calorie diet in middle aged obese people.
Over 45 people who were middle aged and obese participated in this double-blind, randomized controlled trial. Participants were assigned to consume a low-calorie diet and to take either 20 mg of Lutein or a placebo. The study lasted 10 weeks.
At study end both groups equally saw a significant reduction in both body weight and waist circumference. However, the Lutein supplementing participants saw a larger decrease in their body fat percentage. Additionally both visceral fat and serum levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were significantly decreased in the group supplementing with Lutein only. The Lutein group also showed a better ability to preserve lean body mass than the placebo group who actually experienced a decrease in lean body mass.
Lutein, a carotenoid, is mostly known for its ability to support eye health. The link between eye health and Lutein was first reported back in 1994. Recently many studies have shown the importance of Lutein in supporting brain health. This newest study shows Lutein may offer benefits for both cholesterol support and body composition when combined with a low calorie diet.
Further studies are needed.
