New research recently published shows an association between reductions in men’s risks of having a coronary heart disease event and higher levels of DHEA. DHEA considered a prohormone is produced in the adrenal glands and declines as we age.
Over 2600 men between the ages of 69 and 80 participated in this study. Upon entering the study blood samples were taken and analyzed for DHEA and DHEA Sulfate. Cardiovascular outcomes were reviewed for a 5 year period. 302 of the men experienced a coronary heart disease event and 225 men experienced a cerebrovascular disease event. Reductions in DHEA and DHEA sulfate were associated with higher risks of these events.
