A study in the journal Urology finds a daily supplement of Saw Palmetto Extract may improve symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
85 men aged 45 and older participated in this study. Each participant scored greater than 8 on the IPSS (International Prostate Symptom Score) and showed no signs of prostate cancer. The IPSS is a questionnaire and is used to determine the seriousness of symptoms and urinary blockage in men with BPH. Scores of 0 to 7 indicate minimal to no obstruction, scores of 8 to 19 show mild to moderate obstruction and scores of 20 to 35 signify severe blockage. Participants all received a placebo for the first month. 41 men received 320 mg of a standardized Saw Palmetto Extract daily (standardized to 85% – 95% fatty acids and sterols, while the remaining 44 men received a daily placebo. This portion of the study lasted 6 months. Participants filled out IPSS questionnaires in addition to undergoing measurements of sexual function, and urinary flow rates. Side effects of the treatment were also assessed.
In the participants supplementing with the Saw Palmetto Extract, IPSS scores decreased 2.2 points more when compared to the reductions seen by the participants taking the placebo. This reduction was considered to be a statistically significant difference. There were no significant differences seen in sexual function, urinary flow rates or side effects between the two groups.
Symptoms seen in men with BPH include a sensation of incomplete voiding after urination, straining while urination, increases in urinary frequency and urgency. One advantage of Saw Palmetto over conventional medical intervention is the reduction in side effects in Saw Palmetto users over medication users, which is believed to improve the quality of life of men with BPH.
The results of this study are consistent with prior published studies and researchers believe this demonstrates the effectiveness of Saw Palmetto as an effective treatment for BPH symptoms.
One study found Saw Palmetto Extract to be as effective as the medication Finasteride in reducing urinary symptoms seen in men with mild to moderate BPH scores. Additionally, because Finasteride significantly reduces PSA levels, a prostate cancer marker, and Saw Palmetto does not, taking Saw Palmetto would not be likely to mask a Prostate Cancer diagnosis.
Here is some general information about nutrients and the prostate gland:
The urethra, the tube urine flows through, is surrounded by the prostate gland which is located between the bladder and the penis. As a man ages, the prostate will become enlarged which oftentimes reduces the flow of urine which can increase the need to urinate. It may also cause incomplete bladder emptying as well as increase the need to get up often throughout the night to urinate. Many studies show that both Saw Palmetto and Pygeum may have a beneficial effect on the prostate gland and may reduce the need for frequent urination, improve bladder emptying and reduce the need to make multiple trips nightly to the bathroom. This happens because Saw Palmetto helps inhibit the action of dihydrostestosterone, the compound believed to be responsible or enlarging the Prostate gland. Pygeum may help support bladder contractibility. Zinc has also may be helpful in supporting prostate health since this mineral is needed for a healthy Prostate. The largest concentrations of Zinc are found in the Prostate Gland. Amino acids and Pumpkin Seed Oil have also may in supporting healthy Prostate structure and function.\
