Current research by Swiss scientists at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne suggests Vitamin A has promise in preventing cancer cells from growing.
When a patient is undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer most cancer cells die off, however genetic mutations that may have caused the cancer initially, may survive. These surviving cancer cells block a gene referred to as HOXA5. This HOXA5 gene usually stops the growth of cancer cells.
It seems that researchers have found that Vitamin A actually re-activates this HOXA5 gene blocking the tumors progress and normalizing the surrounding tissue. Scientists have seen beneficial results in mice and in humans as well. As a matter of fact these results have recently published in the journal Cancer Cell.
The new study infers that patients who can benefit from this easily tolerated treatment can actually be identified by studying the HOXA5 gene. Researchers see this Vitamin A treatment as a means to treat existing colon cancer in addition to a preventive measure in patients with higher risks for developing colon cancer.
Colon cancer kills approximately 50,000 Americans yearly according to the American Cancer Society.
