According to a research review published in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, long term Probiotic supplementation may control Blood Pressure.
Over 540 adults with either normal or elevated Blood Pressure participated in the 9 studies reviewed by these researchers. The analysis of the study results found Probiotic supplementation reduced Systolic Blood Pressure (top number) by approximately 3.56 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury) and Diastolic Blood Pressure (low number) by an average of 2.38 mm Hg when compared with participants not supplementing with a Probiotic.
Probiotic supplementation showed the best results for participants whose Blood Pressure was considered to be elevated (130/85). Additionally it was long term use (over 8 weeks) of Probiotics that showed Blood Pressure lowing benefits. Researchers also found daily supplementation of higher colony forming units (CFU) and multi strain formulations showed best results.
Researchers concluded Probiotics my aid in supporting healthier Blood Pressure due to the other positive effects Probiotics have on overall health like improvements in Total Cholesterol and LDL Cholesterol, reductions in Insulin Resistance and Blood Glucose, and by helping regulate the Hormone System that regulates Blood Pressure and Fluid Balance.
Further studies are needed.
