A new study found combining the mineral Zinc with Curcumin may provide significant improvements in insulin measures, blood sugar measures and Body Mass Index (BMI) in people who are overweight or obese and who are considered to be pre-diabetic.
Over 80 pre-diabetic overweight or obese individuals participated in this randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: Zinc only (30 mg per day); Curcumin (Turmeric) only (500 mg per day); Zinc plus Curcumin; Placebo. This study lasted 3 months.
82 participants completed the study and no significant differences in dietary micro nutrient intakes, exercise and body weight were seen within the four groups. However the Zinc and the Zinc plus Curcumin groups saw significant decreases in BMI when compared to the Placebo group. Additionally the glycemic measures for all of the 3 groups taking the supplements were significant improved with the greatest statistical significance being in the group supplementing the Zinc plus the Curcumin. The glycemic measures that were tested included fasting glucose, insulin, insulin sensitivity and resistance as well as the HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) which is a marker of the long-term presence of excess glucose in the blood.
Researchers believe that Curcumin’s benefits are linked to its ability to impact body weight, while the Zinc works through multiple pathways such as directly effecting insulin production and secretion in the pancreas as well as its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Additionally researchers suggest Zinc may have an impact on the formation of fat cells.
Further studies are needed.
