A new study found supplementing with Bacopa Monnieri Extract may improve measures of executive functioning and cognitive flexibility in children.
Over 100 male children including adolescents were recruited to participate in this double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study. Participants had elevated levels of inattention and/or hyperactivity. The boys were randomly assigned to receive a supplement of Bacopa Extract, which was determined based on body weight, or a placebo. The trial lasted 14 weeks.
No significant differences in terms of ADHD behaviors were seen in either group over the study period however, researchers did record participants in the Bacopa group showed increases in reaction time speeds as well as decreases in error making when compared to the placebo group. Additionally the Bacopa group showed improvements in sleep routine, executive functioning, and cognitive flexibility when compared to the placebo group.
Bacopa Monnieri Extract is a creeping perennial native to India and has a long history of use in the Ayurvedic traditional medicine system. Bacopa is also known as Brahmi and Water Hyssop and it’s phytonutrients include saponins and bacosides.
Based on the findings of this study, further trials are warranted.
