According to a new study, daily supplementation of Turmeric Extract may improve blood flow to the brain which is linked to increases in cerebral oxygenation.
12 women and men with a mean age of 70 participated in this small double blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study. Participants were randomly assigned to receive a high dose of Turmeric Extract or a placebo. Two hours after supplementation, researchers took certain readings and then participants were required to perform certain hand grip exercises and undergo a cerebral analysis. A one-week washout period occurred and participants than crossed over to the other group.
The data from this study showed cerebral oxygenation was 42% higher after supplementation with the Turmeric Extract when compared to the placebo. Additionally changes in blood volume which was measured as a total of hemoglobin was 54% higher in the Turmeric supplementation group. No differences in heart rate of blood pressure we detected between the Turmeric supplement group and the placebo group.
The 10 gram dose of Turmeric was chosen because oftentimes Turmeric Extract has a low bioavailability after it is ingested. Prior studies have found lower dosages of Turmeric Extract have positive effects on vascular function.
Larger group studies are needed.
