According to a new study recently published in the online issue of Neurology, individuals with sleep problems are more likely to have a stroke. Actually the study found this was the case for almost every sleep issue that was studied. Both sleeping too little and sleeping too much was associated with stroke risk increases. Participants with more than one sleep issue saw stroke risks increase even higher.
This new study followed almost 4,500 individuals, half of the participants (2,243) had suffered a stroke and an almost equal number (2,253) had not experienced a stroke. The average age of the participants was 62. Participants were questioned about their sleeping habits including breathing problems during sleep, snorting, snoring, napping, and quality and duration of sleep.
After adjusting for other factors like smoking, exercise and alcohol consumption, all of which could affect stroke risk, researchers found that individuals who experienced any type of sleep issue were more likely to suffer a stroke than participants with no type of sleep issue.
For example, researchers found participants who slept less than 5 hours nightly were 3 times more like to suffer a stroke than those participants who slept 7 hours per night. Individuals who slept over 9 hours per night were more than twice as likely to suffer from a stroke as those who slept only 7 hours per night. Participants who took a daily nap lasting over an hour were 88 more likely to suffer a stroke than those participants whom did not nap.
Participants who had sleep related breathing issues like snoring for example were 91% more like to suffer from a stroke than individuals whom did not snore. People who snorted were 3 times more likely to suffer a stroke than individuals who did not snort and those participants with sleep apnea were also nearly 3 times more like to suffer a stroke than individuals who did not have sleep apnea.
Participants with five or more of these sleep issues had five times the risks of suffering a stroke than participants who had no sleep issues.
Researchers concluded individuals with sleep problems could be best served by improving their sleep and thus reducing their risk of suffering a stroke.
Further research is needed.
