A study published in the journal Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery found a 3 mg daily Melatonin supplement could improve both Sleep and Tinnitus.
18 individuals with Tinnitus were given a daily 3 mg Melatonin supplement. The study lasted 4 weeks. The participants Tinnitus levels were measured on the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) which scores Tinnitus levels between 0 and 100 with a higher score denoting a more severe case of Tinnitus. At baseline the average THI scores were 35.4. Quality of Sleep was measured us the PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). The mean PSQI score at baseline was 7.9.
At the end of the study THI levels had decreased to 28.8 after the 4 weeks of Melatonin Supplementation. Sleep quality levels had also decreased to 5.0 after the 4 weeks of supplementation.
Researchers believe the degree of improvements seen in Tinnitus was associated with the degree of improvements seen in Sleep Quality although no causality could be established due to the fact that there was no control group in the study design.
Melatonin is a hormone which is secreted in the pineal gland and is stimulated by the onset of darkness. It plays a vital function in the body’s circadian cycle. 15 million Americans experience Tinnitus and consider it to be a serious problem.
Further larger studies are needed.
