A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found supplementing with a Multivitamin daily may improve memory performance by approximately 3.1 years in older adults compared to a placebo.
3500 participants age 60 and above were randomized to receive either a daily Multivitamin supplement or a placebo. The study lasted 3 years. At the end of every year, a series of online cognitive assessments taken at home were performed. The tests were designed to test memory function in an area of the brain which is usually affected by normal aging (the hippocampus).
Test results showed that after the first year, the participants supplementing with the daily Multivitamin had improved memory when compared with the participants supplementing with the placebo. The improvements seen in the group supplementing with the Multivitamin were sustained over the 3 year study period. Researchers estimated that these improvements were equivalent to about 3 years of age-related memory decline. Study data also showed the memory improvements were more apparent in participants who had underlying cardiovascular disease.
Researchers concluded that Multivitamin supplementation holds tremendous promise as both an affordable and safe approach to supporting cognitive health in older adults. Older adults worry about memory changes which often occur natural with aging. This study is a simple and inexpensive solution for slowing down memory loss.
Further studies are in the works.
