According to a meta-analysis of clinical trial data, the length of time needed in intensive care units was significantly reduced with supplementation of Vitamin C at an average dose of 2 grams (2000 mg) per day.
One study reviewed by researchers reported that 35% of patients hospitalized due to acute respiratory infections showed Vitamin C plasma levels below 11 umol/L (the level at which scurvy becomes a risk). Another study included in the meta-analysis found 44% of hospitalized patients had Vitamin C plasma levels lower than 6 umol/L.
18 controlled trials were identified as relevant and 12 of these were included in this meta-analysis on the length of stay. The analysis of the pooled data found that on the average administration of supplemental Vitamin C reduced ICU stays by 7.8%. In 6 of the 12 studies reviewed, orally administered Vitamin C at a dosage level of 2,000 mg daily, reduced the length of ICU stays by an average of 8.6%. In 3 trials where patients were being treated with mechanical ventilation for over a 24 hour period, Vitamin C supplementation reduced the duration of mechanical ventilation by 18.2%.
Further studies are needed.
Based on the results of this meta-analysis, the medical teams at the Northwell Health facilities have immediately been giving their patients affected with Covid-19 (Coronavirus) 1500 mg of Vitamin C intravenously when first admitted, and then re-administering this Vitamin C dosage three or four times daily. Patients receiving this Vitamin C treatment in addition of other medications like Hydroxychloroquine, Azithromycin and other various biologics and blood thinners did significantly better than those not receiving the Vitamin C according to Dr. Andrew Weber, a critical-care specialist affiliated with Northwell Health. He stated they have seen a dramatic reduction in Vitamin C levels in Coronavirus patients suffering from sepsis.
At least 3 clinical trials have begun in China studying the effects of high-dose IV Vitamin C for the treatment of Covid-19.
Here is a little bit more information about Vitamin C and what to look for when buying Vitamin C.
Vitamin C is a water soluble nutrient, which means what your body can not use at the time you take it will be lost. So you want to make sure your Vitamin C is timed released, so you get the maximum absorption of the Vitamin C as you need it. Man is the only mammal that does not manufacture their own Vitamin C internally, so man must rely on either diet or supplementation to get adequate amounts of this important nutrient. Vitamin C is needed for the formation of collagen protein found in bone, cartilage, connective tissue and skin. Vitamin C is also considered to be an antioxidant nutrient and is also essential for wound healing and immune response. Vitamin C helps to strengthen blood vessels, influence the formation of hemoglobin, increases the absorption of iron from the intestinal tract and the disposition of iron in liver tissues. A Vitamin C deficiency can result in symptoms like excessive hair loss, inflamed gums, eye hemorrhages, hemorrhagic skin follicles, easy bruising and bleeding gums.
When buying Vitamin C make sure your Vitamin C is buffered with Calcium which will insure the the Vitamin C is more readily absorbed and stays in the tissues longer and is easier on the stomach. Bioflavonoids, which come from the rind of citrus fruits and are often added to a Vitamin C formula to increase the absorption of the Vittamin C as well as to strengthen the body’s capillaries.
