A new meta-analysis shows that Phytosterols’, mostly known for their Cholesterol reducing potential, may also help support healthier Blood Pressure.
19 clinical trials were reviewed and data was pooled and analyzed. Results showed that Phytosterol supplementation may reduce Systolic Blood Pressure by an average of 1.55 mmHg and Diastolic Blood Pressure by .84 mmHg. These findings were considered to be a significant reduction in Blood Pressure. Subgroup analysis of this pooled data showed benefits were seen in less than 12 weeks with Phytosterol supplementation of 2000 mg, however lower doses were also shown to be effective for Diastolic Blood Pressure reductions.
Phytosterol/Stanols in conjuction with Omega-3 are leading nutrients for supporting Cardiovascular Health. Clinical studies to date show daily supplementation with 1.5 to 3 grams of Phytosterols/Stanols can reduce total Cholesterol by 8-17%. Studies with Omega-3 and Phytosterols were shown to reduce Triglyceride levels by 9 – 16% and LDL Cholesterol by about 13%.
While the data studied by these researchers showed benefits for Blood Pressure support, researchers called for additional studies to confirm these findings.
