Research suggests taking a daily Multivitamin may cut the chances of getting sick in half. Also the results show diabetes may even see more significant benefits from taking a daily Multivitamin.
In this study a group of 130 individuals all over the age of 45 participated in the trial. Participants received either a Multivitamin or a placebo. The study lasted for one year. Less infections like respiratory and urinary tract infections in addition to influenza and gastrointestinal infections were seen in the group supplementing with a Multivitamin when compared with the group receiving a placebo. A lower rate of sickness related absenteeism was also seen. Participants with diabetes had even more significant results overall.
Participants who were given the placebo reported high rates of infections (73%) over the study period than the group receiving the Multivitamin (43%). Rates of infection related absenteeism was higher in the placebo group (43%) compared with the group supplementing with the Multivitamin (21%). 51 of the participants suffered from type 2 diabetes. These participants reported a 93% infection rate compared with a 17% infection rate in the diabetic participants supplementing with the Multivitamin.
At the end of the study researchers called for larger clinical trials to verify these findings.
