A new study analyzing the analgesic effects of Turmeric and Boswellia extracts found significant benefits for relieving pain caused by exercise. Usually plant extracts are not considered as a treatment of acute musculoskeletal pain due to delay in onset of analgesia. Both Turmeric and Bosellia extracts are well studied as anti inflammatory compounds and have gained popularity as more conventional treatments for musculoskeletal pain.
Over 230 individuals participated in this randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled single day study. Participants experienced moderate to severe exercise induced musculoskeletal pain and were randomized to receive a single dose of Turmeric and Boswellia or a placebo. Researchers measured results using a numerical rating scale (NRS), a categorical pain relief scale (PRS), and a short form of McGill questionnaire (SF-MPQ). NRS and PRS were measured from before participants received their 1st dose and every 30 minutes thereafter up to 6 hours at rest. Movement and applying pressure on the affected area were utilized. The onset of analgesia was measured from the time of dosage and was stopped at 6 hours after post dose. The total pain relief (TOTPAR6) and sum of pain intensity difference (SPID6) were analyzed from NRS and PRS scores taken at 6 hours after post dose.
Significant reduction in pain intensity (SPID6rest) was seen in the group supplementing with the Turmeric and Boswellia, 97.85% improvement in the supplement group compared with 2.46% in the placebo group. The onset of pain relief was faster and more significant in the supplement group, 99% of supplement group reported having a mean perceptible pain relief at 68.5 minutes and 96% of participants receiving the supplements reported meaningful pain relief at 191.6 minutes when compared to the placebo group. Additionally a highly significant and continuous improvement in pain was seen in the supplement group with 93% reporting at least 50% or more total pain relief (TOTPAR6) at 1.1 at rest.
Researchers concluded that exercise induced acute musculoskeletal pain could be improved using supplements containing Turmeric and Boswellia in approximately 3 hours, this signifies the supplements show strong analgesic activity.
More studies are needed.
