A new review finds growing evidence that probiotics may be useful tools against liver disease. However, certain exceptions do exist.
Researchers found promise for liver cirrhosis (scaring of the liver due to long term damage) with probiotic supplementation only when the liver although severely scarred had enough healthy cells to perform all it functions adequately. This condition is called compensated cirrhosis. Decompensated cirrhosis occurs when the liver is unable to perform all its functions and complications occur. Complications could be fluid retention or mental confusion. No or little benefits were seen in decompensated cirrhosis with probiotic supplementation.
The major benefit of probiotics in mostly chronic liver diseases, like alcoholic liver disease (ALD), non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD), vital hepatitis and compensated cirrhosis, is the pro-inflammatory mechanisms and the resolution of endotoxemia .
Researchers believe this area will become a major topic in years to come.
