A new study has found a combination of Black Cohosh and St John’s Wort could significantly ease the symptoms women experience as they transition through menopause.
Approximately 300 women participated in this study which lasted 9 months. Participants received either herbal tablets or a placebo. The most common physical symptom experienced by woman transitioning through menopause is “hot flashes” which are characterized by sudden waves of body heat. These “hot flashes” decreased by 53.4% among the women supplementing with the Black Cohosh-St John’s Wort combination. Psychological symptoms also experienced by women transitioning through menopause dropped by 56.4% in the women supplementing with the herbal combination.
Black Cohosh is widely associated with reductions in the symptoms of menopause, while St John’s Wort is believed to be beneficial in treating mild depression.

Hormone replacement therapy, once the standard therapy for treating menopausal symptoms became controversial in 2002 when a National Institutes of Health study showed an increase in the risk of stroke, heart attack or breast cancer in women taking hormone replacement therapy. Further studies are needed.
