Researchers finding the herb Black Cohosh, may reduce hot flashes by acting on body temperature regulation, as opposed to acting like oestrogen, increases the likelihood that Black Cohosh is a safe alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
In the past it was believed that Black Cohosh worked by targeting receptors for oestrogen. This new study finds that Black Cohosh instead targets serotonin receptors. Some of these same receptors are used by the brain to aid in regulating body temperature.
In this study Black Cohosh was given to rats whose ovaries had been surgically removed. The rats were then divided into 2 distinct groups. Each group was fed a different concentration of Black Cohosh extract daily. The study lasted 2 weeks. No oestrogenic effects were seen in the rats receiving the Black Cohosh extract. Instead accompanying lab studies showed the Black Cohosh extract was able to bind to human serotonin receptors even those that regulate body temperature, which has been shown to play a role in regulating hot flashes.
Further studies are planned.
