A new observational study has found supplementing with Multi Vitamin, Omega-3, Probiotic or Vitamin D supplements may reduce the risk of testing positive for COVID-19 for women but not so for men.
An analysis of over 440,000 users of a COVID-19 Symptom Study app found that women who were taking Probiotics saw a 14% reduction in COVID-19 infection risk, a 12% reduction in infection risk for women supplementing with Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids, a 13% reduction in COVID-19 infection risk for women supplementing a Multi Vitamin and a 9% infection risk reduction for Vitamin D supplementation.
The app captured location, age and core health risk factors initially when app users downloaded the app. Later on, app users were asked to supply daily updates on any COVID-19 symptoms, Corona Virus test results and other healthcare related data.
Researchers believe that supplementing with micronutrients, including Vitamin D, are essential for supporting a healthy immune function which in turn aids in both the prevention of and recovery from infections.
Researchers stressed that this study was an observational study and because of that they were unable to establish a causal relationship between supplementation and reductions in the risk of COVID-19 infection. Further studies are needed.
