A recent study suggests that supplementation with Garlic extract could improve some markers associated with reducing the risk of developing Cardiovascular disease better than a placebo.
88 individuals completed this randomized double-blind study which lasted for 3 months. Participants were 25 to 60 years of age and met the BMI criteria set up by the researchers. Additional criteria for participation included a stabile body weight, no drug-treated Hypertension and no history of Heart Failure, Stroke or Coronary Artery Disease. Participants were divided into 2 groups and were assigned to receive either a Garlic Extract supplement or a placebo. Participants were also required to not change their habitual exercise or diet regimes for the study period. The supplement contained an odorless extract of Garlic with 2% Allicin (a Garlic phytonutrient) dosed at 400 mg daily. The placebo capsule contained pure microcrystalline cellulose.
Participants visited a clinic to log in their measurements on body size and weight, blood pressure, and arterial stiffness. Biochemical analysis of metabolic parameters like triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and plasma total cholesterol were also performed.
The participants who supplemented with the Garlic Extract showed modifications in their endothelial biomarkers, which are indicators associated with Cardiovascular risks. Decreases in the Arterial Stiffness Index and Endothelial Function were observed in the Garlic Supplementation group.
Further studies with a larger number of participants are needed.
