A clove of raw garlic has been a home remedy for colds for generations. Scientists recently addressed strong evidence they have discovered that suggests individuals who take a Garlic supplement daily are less likely to come down with the common cold when compared with individuals who do not supplement with Garlic.
Over 140 people volunteered to participate in the research. Half the participants supplemented a Garlic supplement containing allicin, a phytonutrient found in Garlic, daily and half the participants took a placebo. The study lasted 90 days and was held in the winter months where people typically come down with the most colds. Over the study period, 24 of the participants taking the Garlic supplement experienced a cold compared to 65 participants in the placebo group who experienced a cold. Also, the participants in the group who took the Garlic supplement and did catch a cold, where more than likely to have a quicker recovery, than those in the group taking the placebo. Additionally, the chances for re-infection after the initial cold were significantly reduced in the group supplementing with Garlic.
The common cold is the most widespread viral infection worldwide with most people experiencing two to five colds per year.
