A new study found supplementing with Curcumin (Turmeric) supplements might improve Endothelial-Dependent-Dilation (EDD) of the blood vessels in people who are middle-aged and older.
29 individuals between the ages of 45 and 75 years of age participated in this 12 week study. The participants were randomly assigned to receive either a Curcumin supplement or a placebo.
A 34% increase in brachial artery flow-mediation dilation (FMDba), which measures blood flow as well as vascular health, was seen in the participants supplementing with the Curcumin when compared with those supplementing with the placebo. A 44% increase in brachial artery infusions of acetylcholine (FBFach) was also seen. Acetylcholine aids in relaxing blood vessels and releasing Nitric Oxide from the endothelium (the cells that line the interior surface of the blood vessels and lymphatic vessels). Increases in the bioavailability of Nitric Oxide were also observed. No changes in Nitric Oxide bioavailability or FBFach were seen in the participants supplementing with the placebo.
Further studies are in the works.
