According to new research a reduction in the “cytokine storm”, which is what damages the lungs and even kills many individuals with COVID-19, may occur with CBD Oil supplementation.
As reported in the Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, researchers found apelin levels, a natural peptide, decreases significantly with COVID-19 and CBD Oil seems to improve oxygen levels, reduces inflammation and actually improves physical lung damage seen in laboratory models of ARDS (Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrom). CBD oil helps to normalize apelin levels and improve lung function.
In the ARDS model, blood levels of apelin dropped to near zero and increased 20 times with CBD Oil according to researchers. This was considered a very significant improvement.
Apelin is made by cells in the blood, fat tissue, brain, lung and heart. It is an important regulator in bringing inflammation and blood pressure down. When our blood pressure increases, apelin should go up in the correct place, endothelial cells lining blood vessels, to bring our blood pressure back down. Apelin should also go up to normalize the significant increases in inflammation occurring in the lungs in cases of ARDS. This did not happen in this model. In this model apelin levels decreased in both general circulation and lung tissue. However when CBD was administered excessive lung inflammation was reduced which allowed for improved lung function, some structural damage repair to the lungs and improved oxygen levels.
Further research is needed before CBD Oil can be considered as a treatment for COVID-19.
Here are some additional benefits of CBD:
Kidney Transplant Pain:
Chronic pain is a major problem kidney transplant patients experience. Seven kidney transplant patients ranging in age from 58 to 78 years of age, participated in this study to assess the safety, effect and possible drug interactions of CBD Oil when taken for chronic pain. Doses increased from 50 mg to 150 mg twice daily for the three week study period. The initial dose of CBD Oil was 100 mg/d (50 mg twice a day). Two participants required their dosage be decreased. Results showed two patients experienced total pain improvement, four patients experienced a partial response in the first 15 days of the study and one patient saw no changes. It appeared that the CBD Oil was well tolerated and no severe adverse effects were seen.
Epidermolysis Bullosa Pain:
Patients with Epidermolysis bullosa, a rare blistering skin disorder participated in this observational study. Epidermolysis bullosa is challenging to treat due to skin fragility and repeated wound healing issues which cause itching, limited mobility, pain and recurrent infections. In this study, 3 patients with Epdermolysis bullosa self initiated a topical CBD. Results showed one patient was weaned off all oral opioid analgesics completely. All three participants reported less blistering, increased rates of wound healing and improvements in pain with CBD use.
Pain Resulting From HPV Vaccine:
An anecdotal, “compassionate-use”, retrospective, observational, open-label study was completed using sublingual CBD-rich hemp oil drops. Eight females ages 12 – 24 years of age participated in this study. Participants had adverse drug effect (which included pain) after having received the HPV (human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. The initial dose of CBD oil was 25 mg/kg per day supplemented by 2-5 mg/ml of CBD oil weekly. The maximum dose of 150 mg/ml of CBD Oil daily was achieved over a 3 month period. Quality of life, using the medical outcome short-form healthy survey questionnaire, was assessed. Results showed significant benefits in social role functioning, vitality, and physical component score after the treatment with CBD Oil. Pain was also significantly reduced in the study period.
In conclusion, research in these 3 areas shows CBD Oil is effective in managing pain.
Further research is continuing.
CBD (cannabidiol), is a phytocannabinoid. It is found in hemp and research is continuing to find new ways this phytocannabinoid supports the body. CBD is derived from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant. CBD supports the endocannabinoid system which aids the body in supporting overall wellness and many of the body’s overall physical processes, like sleeplessness, digestion, cognition and the nervous system.
CBD itself is only one compound found in hemp. Research supports the benefits of using hemp’s assortment of phtyocannabinoids, like terpenes, flavonoids and other important compounds to provide a synergestic benefit to achieve maximum results when using CBD products.
