A new trial implies daily Zinc supplementation may significantly reduce infections in the elderly while improving the overall antioxidant status of this group of the population.
50 healthy male and female individuals between the ages of 55 and 87 participated in this double-blind, placebo controlled study. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a daily Zinc supplement providing 45 mg of elemental Zinc or a placebo. The study lasted 12 months. At the beginning of the study, researchers found the older participants usually had a significantly lower blood level of Zinc along with increased levels of oxidative stress when compared with the younger participants.
At the end of the study, the group supplementing with Zinc had a significant reduction in the number of infections when compared to the group supplementing with the placebo. Blood samples showed the levels of TNF-alpha (Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha), an inflammation marker were reduced in the Zinc supplementing participants. Markers of oxidative stress were also reduced in the group receiving the Zinc supplement.
Zinc is one of the most plentiful trace elements found in the body, second to Iron. It is believed to be essential for maintaining a healthy immune system and mediated many physiological functions.
