A new study found a healthy diet in combination with a specific set of supplements significantly lowered the risk of developing Cardiovascular Disease.
Almost 70,000 participants participated in this epidemiological study. Participants were all 45 years and above and were a part of the 45 and Up Study which had a ten-year follow up period.
Researchers found that participants who followed a certain type of eating pattern which corresponded to a long-term healthier diet and who supplemented with certain nutrients like a Multi Vitamin and Mineral with or without Omega-3 had a reduced incidence of Cardiovascular Disease when compared with any other group participating in the study.
Other Epidemiological studies have shown the importance of healthy eating in reducing the risk of developing Cardiovascular Disease. However, consistent results showing the association between Multivitamin Mineral supplementation and the reduction of CVD have not yet been established. Researchers also found the benefit of supplementation with Omega-3 in combination with a long term healthy diet also lowered the risk of developing Cardiovascular Disease.
Participants who added Calcium supplements to their Multi Vitamin Minerals supplement, Omega 3 and long term healthy diet also had a lower incidence rate of Obesity. An unhealthy diet negated the benefits supplementation had in supporting a lower Cardiovascular Disease risk. Prior studies show Obesity often occurs in people who intake less Calcium leading researchers to believe that increasing daily Calcium could be a strategy for reducing Obesity.
This study provides further evidence that Multi Vitamin Mineral supplementation along with supplementation of Omega-3 and Calcium in combination with a healthy long term diet impacts Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease risks.
Further studies are needed.
