A new review recently published in the British Medical Journal, shows the essential mineral Zinc, which has undergone many reviews looking at its role in immune function, may help to shorten or prevent the symptoms associated with respiratory tract infections.
28 randomized, placebo controlled human clinical studies looking at the health outcomes of over 5,400 participants were reviewed by researchers. Most of the studies used Zinc Lozenges as the means for participants to supplement Zinc.
Researchers found a number of significantly beneficial relationships between RTI (respiratory Tract Infections) and Zinc supplementation, even when the study participants were not deficient in Zinc:
Oral or intranasal Zinc prevented 5 Respiratory Tract Infections per 100 persons/month
Zinc supplementation reduced the symptoms of RTI 2 days earlier than a placebo
Adults who did not supplement with Zinc were 19% more likely to stay symptomatic 7 days after coming down with a Respiratory Tract Infection
Researchers concluded that Zinc might both shorten the duration of Respiratory Tract Infection as well as prevent RTI symptoms.
Zinc seems to provide broad spectrum antiviral properties in vitro against most of the common respiratory viruses which include Corona Viruses. Zinc is important for ACE2 activity, homeostasis, inflammation and immunity. Zinc also assists with tissue responses to hypoxia. Zinc is also easily available which makes Zinc an important “natural” alternative to self manage some Respiratory Tract Infections since many times there are not many therapeutic options.
More detailed studies are needed.
