According to a new study, a daily dose of a Multi-Strain Probiotic can improve mood with reductions seen in fatigue, anger and depression as well as improvements seen in sleep quality.
38 healthy students ranging in age from 18 to 35 years, participated in this double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Participants were grouped into an experimental group or a control group randomly through a computer generated list. The groups were evenly balanced in terms of participant’s ages, genders and engagement in physical activity. The participants in the experiment group supplemented with a Multi Strain Probiotic daily. The study lasted 6 weeks. Participant’s mood, personality dimensions, and sleep quality were assessed at the onset of the study, at three weeks, at six weeks, and again after a 3 week washout period. A series of self assessment tests were used to measure study results.
To measure acceptance, researchers used The Leiden Index of Depression Sensitivity-Revised test. Study results showed a significant difference between the experiment group and the control group. Results from The Profile of Mood State suggested the experimental group showed a reduction in their depressive mood state. Additionally this effect stayed stable after the 3 week washout period. The Temperament and Character Inventory results showed the participants who had supplemented with the Probiotic for the 6 week study period were more likely to look for new experiences that were more self-focused than those in the control group. Finally the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index results suggested that poor sleep quality was related to the participants experiencing higher levels of fatigue, confusion, anger, tension, depression and anxiety. Conversely good sleep quality was associated with higher levels of vigor. Changes in mood state and sleep quality were seen in the experimental group but not in the control group.
More studies are needed.
