A new study recently published in the Journal of Neurochemistry, found bioactive compounds which occur naturally in the mushroom Lion’s Mane can improve nerve growth and improve memory. Lion’s Mane has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine for its health and brain boosting properties. These findings offer a new means to treat and maybe prevent neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and age related cognitive decline.
Laboratory tests were used to measure the neurotrophic effects of Lion’s Mane active phytonutrient Hericium erinaceus on cultured brain cells. Researchers found that this active compound promoted neuron projections, extending and connecting to other neurons. Super resolution microscopy was used as a way to quantify the neurotrophic effects of this mushroom extract. Increases in the size of growth cones, which are use by brain cells to sense their environment and to establish new connections with other neurons in the brain, were seen. Pre clinical testing found significant impacts on brain cell growth as well as memory improvements were seen with Lion’s Mane.
Additional healthy enhancing compounds like antioxidants and beta glucans are also found in Lion’s Mane.
Other studies performed in the past show that Lion’s Mane has very potent anti inflammatory properties and may help reduce or protect against the following:
- Recovery from Nervous System Injuries
- Anxiety
- Cancer
- Depression
- Dementia
- Inflammation and Oxidative Stress
- Cardiovascular Disease Risk
- Immune Function
- Ulcers
- Diabetes
Further studies are in the works.
